By Amanda Marchetti

Addie Simonson is a busy woman: three kids at home and over 30 in the classroom to deal with, day in and day out. Her husband travels a lot, so a lot of the daily chores at home fall on her shoulders in the evenings and sometimes it feels like she gets more sleep during her planning period at 10:45AM than she does in her own bed at 10:45PM (which is to say, very little).

Although she loves her children, they’re not exactly “easy” to handle. Aside from being obviously out-numbered, her middle child, eight-year-old Jack, is not doing well in school. Teachers are losing patience with him, and what started out as “oh, boys will be boys,” has turned into, “there must be something wrong with him.”

Addie has been carting him to doctors and therapists – they’re throwing information about medication at her that quite frankly scares her. When she’s not at home worrying about Jack’s success in school, she’s worrying about her own success as a 1st grade teacher. No Child Left Behind seems to have left a lot of her kids behind – kids who can’t tell the difference between different letters, who can’t ‘sound things out,” and who wouldn’t be able to sit still if their lives depended on it. To make matters worse, the state has cut the budget again – she’s got a couple hundred to tide her over for the year…if she’s lucky.

One day, during that planning period/nap time, Addie comes across a website dedicated to “exercising the brain.” It sounds a little “new-agey” at first, but she looks around – there’s research on its effectiveness and it makes sense. If you exercise your brain the same way you exercise your muscles, surely it will help you make that “muscle” strong too.

After reading product descriptions, Addie comes across one that could be the solution to her problems. TNT Reading is for children from 4-9; in other words, it’s a software program designed for her students…and even for her son. To her delight, there are both school licenses and home licenses available. To be sure she’s not just picking out any old program, Addie prints out the research – it looks like years of planning and research went into the development of this program. Plus, it has won three prestigious awards. The program claims to boost not only reading skills, but other learning skills like attention and memory, too. If Addie can get this program to make her students and her child sit down and pay attention, it would be worth its weight in gold.

Of course, that’s just an expression and not reality…cost is one of those things that right now seems to be more important than quality. How much is cost? That’s the bottom line with people these days and her Principal is no exception.

TNT Reading can help solve a lot of Addie’s problems. On the personal level, she will have a resource for her son’s learning difficulties. She can first use the program to test him to see what areas he struggles with, and then the program will help him focus on and improve those skills. The exercises give little Jack variety – so he doesn’t get bored, and multiple difficulty levels – so he doesn’t get stuck somewhere or think it’s too easy. With the Home Tutor, Addie can see how her son is progressing on the various skills. Over the next 12 months, Addie will be able to help her son advance through the mastery levels for both reading and comprehension. She can capture his attention and make reading – and learning – fun for him.

Professionally, Addie finds the program is a two-fold blessing. First, it’s a computer game – her kids are excited about it because it breaks up regular lessons. Second, the one-year licenses will allow her to put the software on each computer in her classroom, which in turn allows her to engage all her students at one time. Addie can take a breather as the exercises run themselves for each student and can identify each child’s unique learning needs. If she needs to show progress to her Principal or to the kids’ parents, she can access that feature in TNT Reading Pro. Any success or progress made here will allow her to make the case for getting additional licenses in the future – she’ll be able to share news of her success with her fellow teachers, too.

Okay, so what would TNT Reading do for Addie’s school? She will need to present a strong case to her Principal. A very old-fashioned educator, he is skeptical of fancy computer “games.” Really, people were learning just fine without them back in the ‘50s.

Remember that research I mentioned? It supports the development and use of video games to focus on seven key factors, including phonemic awareness, working memory, auditory discrimination, and attention. And TNT Reading is curriculum-based. How could you go wrong systematically following the curriculum and teaching the kids the basics of reading in a way that they can really enjoy and relate to? As for the price – Addie’s school can choose what works best economically for her school from a number of cost-effective options. Pricing per student per year can be as low as $15.98 per student! Or the school could invest towards the future by purchasing licensing for unlimited students, unlimited time for as low as $267 per station.

As an innovative approach to education, TNT Reading improves a student’s functionality, which in turns leads to better academic performance in other areas. With game breaks and “prizes,” it reinforces a child’s self-esteem and makes him want to learn. Best of all, the program allows Addie to identify each student’s impairments so she can schedule IEP goals for reading and learning.

Ok, now we’ve got the principal’s attention. Although he’s old-fashioned (or maybe because he’s old fashioned), he really wants his students and his school to be top-notch. Maybe, he thinks, technology and games do have a place in education. In a system that focuses on “teaching to the test,” TNT Reading encourages children of the computer generation to think, read, and learn for themselves. Students must actively engage with the software in order to succeed. They need to be fast and efficient, yes, but also accurate. And the reward is that they have fun learning.

TNT makes learning to read fun. But it’s not just any ordinary reading series; it also improves attention, working memory, mental processing speed, and auditory discrimination – the cognitive abilities critical for reading comprehension.

Now Featuring BrainPower™!
If you wish, you can now include brainwave training in conjunction with TNT Reading training. Your clients learn to develop a positive, alert, relaxed mental state while they complete the reading exercises. The client works his way through six different BrainPower challenges as he masters the skills of staying focused, calm, and aware. You can use the BrainPower capability of your TNT Reading System simply by investing an additional $99 to purchase the Brainwave device.

According to a recent study published in Pediatrics, up to 50% of children with ADHD or ADD have reading disabilities. The 2011 Nation’s Report Card from the US Department of Education shows that 58% of fourth graders are not proficient readers. This statistic has remained unchanged since 2007. How will these children function in a society where reading and thinking are crucial for learning, responsible citizenship, and economic survival?

Difficulties with basic reading skills at the Kindergarten level don’t usually disappear on their own. In addition, if a child processes information slowly, or can’t pay attention or remember, academic instruction will not help him learn to differentiate letter sounds or understand the meaning of what he reads. If he is still struggling by the third grade, social studies and science will be closed books. Early intervention is critical if he is not to remain at a severe disadvantage throughout his academic and adult life.

TNT Reading identifies precisely where the child is having difficulty. It then uses a powerful combination of targeted computerized cognitive and reading “games” to help children K-3 develop their abilities. Following national Common Core Standards, TNT Reading is a comprehensive system that tests and then trains children to learn and to read.

TNT includes over 1,000 exercises!

The Test ‘n’ Train model is ideal for your RTI program and for setting IEP goals.

TNT Reading comes with unlimited FREE reading tests! Because the TNT reading tests provide you with the means for screening, monitoring progress, and diagnosing problems, and then it bases training directly on the test results, it saves you time and money. Each test determines exactly what a child needs to focus on, then creates his training plan accordingly. The training plan automatically continually assesses progress on each specific skill, and then self-adjusts the training. Test scores can be printed for inclusion in the student’s record.

Based on many years of research and hundreds of studies, Test ‘n’ Train Reading focuses on the seven components that have the greatest impact on a child’s ability to learn to read – letter recognition, phonemic awareness, phonic skills, mental processing speed, auditory discrimination, working memory, and attention.

Customizable

While TNT Reading can be run completely automatically, it also allows you to customize it as you wish. You can even go into the automated training plans and select exactly which specific programs you want to use. You can also set the criteria for passing each level; you can choose whether to test first, then train, or to train first, then test; you can run the exercises in standard or accelerated mode; you can choose to alternate between Reading Mastery and Reading Comprehension exercises; and you can choose to reward a student who tries very hard without success.

Motivating

<img class="alignright" style="border: 0px none; margin: 0px 5px;" src="http://www.braintrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/TNTReadingTutor-Review2.png" alt="I also like the game breaks between lessons. Students are rewarded with certificates at every level.

This summer is the time to improve your child’s reading and attention.
The TNT Reading Tutor, the home version of TNT Reading, makes learning to read rewarding and fun. Based on over twenty years of reading research, it helps children grades K – 3 master valuable early reading concepts while they develop better memory, attention, and reasoning ability. Just select your child’s grade level, then stand back while TNT Reading Tutor creates a structured learning plan just for him. The TNT Reading Tutor focuses on the skills that research has shown to have the greatest impact on a child’s ability to learn to read – letter recognition, phonemic awareness, phonics, mental processing speed, auditory discrimination, working memory, and attention. It is licensed for one player for one year.

TNT Reading Tutor uses a powerful combination of targeted computerized cognitive and reading “games” to help children K-3 develop their abilities. Following national Common Core Standards, TNT Reading is a comprehensive system that trains children to learn and to read.
More Details About TNT Reading Tutor

TNT Reading Mastery Level 1
Mastery Step 1 (K – 1st Grade, 124 Exercises)- Upper & lower case letter recognition, matching, sequencing.- Alphabetical order- Differentiation between uppercase and lowercase letters Mastery Step 2 (K – 1st Grade, 96 Exercises)- Matching letters to their correct consonant and vowel sounds- Blending consonant and vowel sounds together to form words Mastery Step 3 (K – 2nd Grade, 120 Exercises)- Discrimination between similar beginning or ending sounds of words- Distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds in words- Learning the different sounds of “y” as a vowel
TNT Reading Mastery Level 2
Mastery Step 4 (K – 3rd Grade, 112 Exercises)- Identifying words based on beginning and ending letters or sounds.- Recognizing and spelling basic sight words of up to two phonemes Mastery Step 5 (1st – 3rd Grade, 104 Exercises)- Identifying and discriminating rhyming words using short vowel sounds- Identifying and decoding beginning letters and vowels in simple words Mastery Step 6 (1st – 3rd Grade, 104 Exercises)- Identifying and decoding ending letters of words- Discriminating between different but similar middle consonant sounds of words- Recognizing and spelling basic sight words comprised of three phonemes.
TNT Reading Mastery Level 3
<img class="alignleft" alt="Develop your listening skills.
Click for Standard Sample Scales Analysis

IVA+Plus standard scale scores are presented in the form of charts, graphs, numeric raw scores and numeric quotient scores. As is the case for most IQ tests, quotient scores have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. These familiar interpretative guidelines make interpretation easy. An interpretive flowchart is available in the IVA+Plus help files that provides you with a step-by-step, systematized guide to interpreting test results. The Narrative Interpretive Report Writers are based on this flowchart.

On the first page of the IVA+Plus Standard Scales Analysis are visual and auditory validity indicators. These important indicators tell you if the test taker made so many random responses that the rest of the test data are meaningless.

IVA+Plus scores are divided into four categories — Attention, Response Control, Attribute and Symptomatic. Primary diagnostic scales are the Full Scale Response Control Quotient and the Full Scale Attention Quotient. The Full Scale Response Control Quotient is based on separate Auditory and Visual Response Control Quotient scores. These Response Control Quotient scores are derived from visual and auditory Prudence, Consistency and Stamina scales.

Prudence is a measure of impulsivity and response inhibition as evidenced by three different types of errors of commission.

Consistency measures the general reliability and variability of response times and is used to help measure the ability to stay on task.

Stamina compares the mean reaction times of correct responses during the first 200 trials to the last 200 trials. This score is used to identify problems related to sustaining attention and effort over time.

The Full Scale Attention Quotient is derived from separate Auditory and Visual Attention Quotients. The Attention Quotient scores are based on equal measures of visual and auditory Vigilance, Focus and Speed.

Vigilance is a measure of inattention as evidenced by two different types of errors of omission.

Focus reflects the total variability of mental processing speed for all correct responses.

Speed reflects the average reaction time for all correct responses throughout the test and helps identify attention processing problems related to slow discriminatory mental processing.

The Fine Motor Regulation scale provides additional information by recording off-task behaviors with the mouse — multiple clicks, spontaneous clicks during instruction periods, anticipatory clicks, and holding the mouse button down. In behavioral terms, the Fine Motor Regulation score quantifies fidgetiness and restlessness associated with small motor hyperactivity.

IVA+Plus’ Attribute scores provide clinicians with data regarding the client’s learning style. These scales are:

Balance indicates whether the test taker processes information more quickly visually or aurally, or is equally quick in either modality.

Readiness indicates whether the test taker processes information more quickly when the demand is quicker or when it is slower. Provides a subtle measure of inattention when the test taker just “can’t quite keep up.”

IVA+Plus’ Symptomatic scales are auditory and visual Comprehension, Persistence and Sensory/Motor.

Comprehension identifies random responding by measuring idiopathic errors. Research has shown this to be the single most sensitive sub-scale in discriminating ADHD.

Persistence is a measure of motivation when the test taker is asked to do “one more thing.” It can also reflect motor or mental fatigue.

Sensory/Motor scales provide a measure of reaction time speed to simple, singular test stimuli (i.e., the “1″). These scales help screen for slow reaction times which may impair test performance or possibly indicate neurological, psychological or learning problems.

Taken together, the Attribute and Symptomatic scales help the clinician to understand a person’s best modality for learning, need for structure, motivation level, comprehension, and possible learning, emotional or neurological problems.

Two additional scales – the Sustained Auditory Attention Quotient and the Sustained Visual Attention Quotient provide global measures of a person’s ability to respond accurately, quickly, and reliably to auditory and visual stimuli under low demand conditions. In addition, these scales assess the test-taker’s ability to remain attentive and be flexible when the conditions change from low to high demand.

The only CPT created specifically to help clinicians better assess adults with ADHD

The IVA-AE (Advanced Edition), like the IVA+Plus, a combined visual and auditory continuous performance test of attention and response control. It is unique in that it is the only CPT designed specifically to help clinicians identify and measure attention problems in the adult population. The IVA-AE is normed for ages 18 – 50 (N=236, divided by gender). It can be used either alone or in conjunction with the IVA+Plus. The task is quite challenging – visual and auditory numbers from 2 to 8 are presented at one-second intervals; the task is to click when you see a 3 or hear a 5. Different numbers are presented simultaneously visually and aurally. For example, an auditory 3 may be presented at the same time as a visual 6. Thus, the subject is challenged to keep the rule in mind and maintain his or her attention to the task of making constant quick “go” or “no go” decisions. The verbal stimuli are spoken by a variety of different voices, and the numbers are displayed using a variety of different fonts. The clinician can opt to use the short version (10 minutes) or the extended version (20 minutes) of the test. The IVA-AE has excellent concurrent validity with the IVA+Plus.

Why do you need the IVA-AE?

The IVA-AE is especially important in helping clinicians to improve their assessment of adult clients, since teacher and parent rating scales are not available for this population. Since it is quite long and challenging, it may pick up problems in some adults who may be capable of maintaining their attention just long enough to succeed on the IVA+Plus, which is shorter and easier. In its extended version, the IVA-AE compares performance in the second half of the test with performance in the first half. It provides you with a useful measure of how mental fatigue affects your client’s abilities. In its short version, the IVA-AE makes an excellent, highly time-efficient screening tool.
